New Race Course – Rogue One

The snow melted into mud season a little earlier than usual this year. The frost heaves have settled down and the trails are currently a mix of firm and sloppy, trending more toward one or the other depending on the weather. There is even a nice crop of wild onions growing along the upper single track on course – a little something for everyone!

For returning racers, please note that we have some course changes on order. All the low and high points are the same as in the past, but the course takes you on some new routes along the way:

  • Reroute at the start. As you head into Butternut Cabin Trail, you’ll take a zig zag through the new Butternutter trail.
  • From KOM/Adirondack View high point, you’ll continue past the old turn-off and head down Kasie’s Climb before rejoining the original course to the bottom.
  • On the 2nd sustained climb, you’ll turn off Eli’s Escape just before the top, onto lower Darth Vader, a new-to-SHMR racers pleasant section of single track.
  • Later on, you will leave Darth Vader (avoiding the sketchy cliff bridge!) and instead finish the ascent up Rogue One – a very fun single track with some sections of rock scramble.
  • Final change. On the 3rd loop you’ll take a slightly rerouted way along the single track and will come out a little bit further on Ridge Rd trail, still finishing up on the wide sweeping downhill (and that little rise to the finish…).

Please check out Trailforks for a detailed GPS map: https://www.trailforks.com/event/6016/

There is also lots more info and updated course maps over on our the Course page.

For anyone local, a first round of orange arrows are in place to show you the way. Your will find the first arrow in Molly’s Meadow near the start of Lower Saddle/Butternutter.

2022 Race Registration Details

Hello Racers and Friends,

The 2022 Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race is on and we are excited to be planning the race again after two years off (yikes!). This year’s race date is Saturday, April 23, 2022 with a 12:00 noon start.

Please read on for our attempt at explaining this year’s registration and rationale. In 2020 we had 300 racers registered and the race was just weeks away when COVID forced us to postpone, then cancel the race.

As you might remember, we gave all registered runners 3 choices: 1) credit for a future SHMR, 2) a refund or 3) donate their entry to the race. We are going to give these same 300 racers the opportunity to register for 2022 first, then we’ll open registration a few days later for general registration.

If you were registered for the 2020 race we will email you on Friday, February 25 before registration opens (check junk/spam folders too!) with further instructions about how to register. Please send a note to sleepyhollowmtnrace@gmail.com if you have questions.

Important Dates

  • Priority Registration for racers that were signed up to race in 2020 opens Friday, February 25, 2022 7:00am
  • General Registration opens Wednesday, March 2, 2022 7:00am

Race Details

  • sleepyhollowmtnrace.com
  • Online pre reg is $25 per person + reg fee
  • Online registration will close at 300 people
  • No day of race registration
  • No waitlist
  • No refunds *See COVID-19 Attestation below for possible exception.

COVID-19 ATTESTATION

I attest that I will not participate in the event if any of the following apply;

1.)  I am newly diagnosed with COVID-19 within 7 days prior to the event.

2.)  I am aware that I have been in close contact with a person(s) who is newly diagnosed with COVID-19 within 7 days prior to the event.

3.)  I am unvaccinated and I have symptoms of COVID-19 within 7 days of the event.

We have a very generous refund policy so if any of the above apply within 7 days prior to the event please contact us for a full refund.

This race is part of the USATF-NE Mountain Running Series

The trails over here are currently holding onto a deep base of snow, ready to melt into some great mud for you come April! Can’t wait to see you in a couple months!

Race Update

Hello fellow mountain runners,

Over the course of a nice ski on the trails at Sleepy Hollow, we hashed out all the possibilities for the next Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race. As race directors, we love having you come share these trails with us and feel an immense responsibility to keep you and our community safe while doing so. With sadness, but also knowing it’s the right thing to do, we reached the conclusion that we can’t host our race this spring. The 2021 Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race is cancelled.

Among many considerations, we can’t guarantee when inter-state travel restrictions will be lifted. We are unable to guarantee a later date, once gatherings are allowed, because our venue needs to prioritize wedding reservations after a tough year for business. We are keeping an open mind and doing some out of the box brainstorming, so you may hear from us at some point this year about a way to get your Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race fix.

If you were a registered runner for the 2020 race, you should have received an email from us about options for getting a refund, credit for a future Sleepy Hollow Mountain Race or how to donate your registration fee to help support the future of the race. Everyone who was registered for the 2020 race will continue to receive information about the next race.

We plan to be back in the series in full force in the spring of 2022, complete with mud, maple syrup, Darth & friends, burritos, and you, our mountain goat family.

We’re here if you need to reach out with any questions or just say hi:  sleepyhollowmtnrace@gmail.com

Stay healthy!

Thank you,

Kasie & Liz

2020 Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race Canceled

We have decided to officially cancel the Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race for 2020. It was a challenging decision, but we believe that it’s best based on the current and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We are sad not to be hosting our race and will miss seeing you all, but we know it’s the right decision.

We plan to be back as part of the 2021 USATF-NE Mountain Race Series and we look forward to seeing our mountain running friends soon.

Our tentative reschedule date is April 25, 2021. We will provide more details in early 2021.

As this is a race that regularly sells out we have decided that everyone registered for the 2020 race will receive priority for racing in 2021. This includes both currently registered racers and racers that had asked for a refund because they were not able to make our rescheduled date in November 2020.

We have several options for how you can proceed:

  1. Defer your entry to next year. If you are registered and still able to race on the tentative rescheduled 2021 date, good news! You don’t need to do anything.
  2. Withdraw from the race. If you aren’t able to join us in 2021, fill out this form to let us know how you would like to proceed. You may either request a refund or opt for your entry dollars to become a donation to Feeding Chittenden.
  3. If you are already withdrawn, but want to reenter for the 2021 race please email us sleepyhollowmtnrace@gmail.com.

Unsure if you’re currently registered or can’t remember if you withdrew or not? Check the “Who is registered” list here. We will update this weekly as changes come in.

Please take your time to consider whether you plan to race or not. We’ll send this info again over the fall and winter.

And as always please reach out to us by email if you have a question.

Take care,

Kasie and Liz

Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race Postponed until November 15, 2020

First of all, we hope that you are staying healthy and getting out for some fresh air in this uncertain time. If your internet feed is anything like ours right now, the last thing you need is another notice as you have far more important things to focus on, but we do want to communicate this update in our race status: In light of the current CDC recommendations, it is clear that we will not be able to hold our race as originally scheduled on April 26th. We have decided to postpone the Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race until November 15, 2020.

For planners who like to know that there is a system in place, read on. For those of you feeling overwhelmed or unsure, you can ignore the rest of this post for now. We will send out all important information multiple times over the summer and fall. We don’t need a decision from you now.

The plan going forward:

  • If you are registered and still able to race on the rescheduled date, Nov 15, 2020, good news! You don’t need to do anything.
  • If the new race date, Nov 15, 2020 conflicts with another event in your life or you are otherwise unable to race, we are sorry. You may withdraw.
    • Registered racers have until October 1st to withdraw. You may either request a refund or opt for your entry dollars to become a donation to Feeding Chittenden.
    • If or when you know that you need to withdraw, please use this Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race Withdrawal Form to communicate how you would like to proceed.
  • In case any of your mountain running friends weren’t on the original reg list and want in on the fun, you can let them know that we do plan to open up a limited amount of spots after the completion of the withdrawal period.
  • Unsure if you’re currently registered or can’t remember if you withdrew or not? Check the “Who is registered” list here. We will update this weekly as changes come in.

Please take your time to consider whether you plan to race or not. Again, we don’t need answers now. We’ll send this info again over the summer and fall. In the meantime, take care.

Registration is closed for 2020

Registration is closed. We reached our max capacity of 300 registrants today! While we wish we could have an unlimited amount of runners come run at Sleepy Hollow, we have a responsibility to stay within the capacity of the parking lot and respect the impact on the trails during Vermont’s mud season. Thank you for understanding. This is an amazing and privileged problem to have. We are humbled by all the devotion you show every year for our event with all its mud, hills, galactic characters, and burrito fixings!

There are no refunds, no waitlist.

There is no day of race registration.

Number pickup is on race day from 10:30am-11:45am in the pavilion at Sleepy Hollow.
Sleepy Hollow is located at 427 Ski Lodge Drive, Huntington, VT 05462

Please check the race website for updates on mud season road conditions and race updates.

We encourage everyone to carpool, whether it’s all the way from home or from the Richmond Park and Ride just of 89 in Richmond, VT.

We look forward to seeing you at the race.
Kasie and Liz

It took some time, but the race course is now sufficiently buried in snow. . . I guess that means it must be time to open race registration.
