Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race

Hello Racers and Friends,

Word is the groundhog predicted an early spring, so we figured we’d better get going with preparation for another installment in the Sleepy Hollow Mountain Race. 

The race will be held again at our temporary second home, the Cochran’s Ski Area in nearby Richmond, VT. So many happy couples are getting married at Sleepy Hollow that their calendar was chock full again from snow melt to snow fall. Luckily the trails at Cochran’s are fun, the hills plentiful, and the family owned small Vermont ski area vibe makes for a good time all around.

• Online pre reg is $30 + reg fee (late rate after 4/26 $40); Under 18 is $25 + reg fee
• Kids fun run will be held just before the start, free and online reg encouraged

This race is part of the USATF-NE Mountain Running Series, the oldest mountain running circuit in the US.

The Basics

Race Date: Sunday, May 7, 2023

Start Time: 12 Noon

Address: 910 Cochran Road, Richmond, VT

Bib Pickup: Sunday from 10:00am-11:45am at the Cochran’s Ski Area base lodge

Day of Race Registration: no day of race registration this year

Awards and refreshments to follow the completion of the race at the base lodge area.

Trail Conditions & Course Details

The trails have been quite wet all week but with a couple of drier days heading into the weekend we expect there to be overall good trail conditions, with only sections of mud and small stream crossings. The single track has all been leaf blown, but there are lots of roots and rocks and some wooden bridges so you will need to take care with your footing – it is a trail race after all! Please Consider Carpooling

Vermont has a lot of very useful and convenient Park & Rides. Even if you can’t carpool for the entire trip to Cochran’s Ski Area you could set up a partial carpool by arranging to meet fellow racers at a Park & Ride en route.

Kids Race – There is still time to register.

While adult registration has closed, kids can still sign up in person on race day starting at 10:30 at the base of the alpine ski slope – look for a wooden platform with a pop-up tent. The kids race is free and will start at 11:15am. Kids Race Info Here

Registration is open until Friday, May 5th 11:59pm and there is no day of race registration.  Please help us get the word out to anyone that would still like to race. 

Trail Conditions & Shoe Recommendation
The trails have a bit of everything. There are streams to leap on the single track and plenty of mud! We recommend wearing shoes with good tread on them to navigate the slippery and sloppy parts of the trail. The weather this weekend looks to be clearing with some sun and temperatures in the 60s.

For those of you doing the USATF-NE Mountain Circuit, remember to renew your USATF membership for 2023 so that you can be counted in the series results (and earn your coveted Mountain Goat Status/2024 Mt. Washington Bypass).

Updating your Entry on RunReg – Did you forget to add club name or USATF #?
Login to your RunReg account and you can edit your entry until May 5. Changes after May 5 can be made on race day at bib pickup.

Pancakes!
Cochran’s is the home of the Pancake Trailer and we are psyched to have pancakes after the race! Kasie is bringing Running Saps Maple Syrup and we’ll have both regular and GF pancakes. Plates and forks provided, but also please feel free to bring your own reusable plate and fork.

Kids Race
The kids race is a fun mini-trail run for kids. We’ll have a short lollipop race for the youngest kids (2-5 year olds), then 1 and 2 lap options for the older kids. Registration is free and you can sign up on RunReg until May 5 or in person on race day at the lodge at Cochran’s. Kids race start time is 11:15am. More Kids Race Info Here

Camping 
Folks coming in the day before are welcome to car/van/truck camp in Cochran’s parking lot. If you would like to pitch a tent,we just ask that you please stick to the alpine ski trails or parking lot (no tents on the lodge side of the parking lot, or at the start/finish area). Camping is free. The base lodge will be unlocked and has bathrooms. We appreciate your respect for Cochran’s property! More Lodging Info Here

With the snow melted, we’ve be able to get back out on the course and put together some maps and a photo tour for those of you wondering what you’re getting yourself in for! It’s a real fun route that we’re looking forward to sharing with everyone on race day. You’ll run on some open alpine ski slope, a lot of wooded single track, with plenty of climbing, descending, and – I expect – some mud!

Course Details: The ~7 mile course starts and finishes at the base of Cochran’s alpine trails. Runners will complete a long loop (~5mi) plus a short loop (~2mi). Both loops start with a climb up the alpine ski trail, then enter forested single track the rest of the way along some top terrain and for the descent back down to the base area. The first loop goes deeper into the woods, continuing to climb on single track to the high-point of the course then winding down to the base. The second time around, runners take a shortcut just above the top of the alpine slope, linking back into the same trail that brings you down to the base for the finish.

Hello Mountain Goats!

The sap is boiling in our sugarhouse while I take a moment away to write this, which means spring is coming! 

Registration is open and it’s been fun to see lots of familiar and new names rolling in on the list of registered runners. Sleepy Hollow Mtn Race, Sunday, May 7th, noon start. Spread the word! 

We also want to invite you to put your creative minds into action. Liz and I were discussing possibilities for a new race logo and decided it would be fun to involve racers in a LOGO DESIGN CONTEST! 

A little history: Our original logo was the brainchild of Paul Kirsch, USATF-NE MUT Chairperson extraordinaire. Paul came across an event called the Rural Olympics including an category dubbed “Feats of Strength by Ruralites”. He took this tagline, photoshopped it under a goat that bears a striking resemblance to the Loon Mtn Race goat, sent it our way and our logo was born (circa 2012).

While it’s a pretty cool logo, change is good too. Our race has taken on some real personality over the years and it would be awesome to have a logo that reflects what we’re all about. 

If we select your design, we will award you with a GRAND PRIZE:
